Helvetica
Finally saw the much talked about documentary Helvetica.
It is a nicely made documentary, that is able to draw you into the world of fonts, types and egotistic designers ;) ! The font has had a fairly substantial history (released first in 1957), with a lot of ups and downs through the design fad cycles.
Interesting aspects:
- initially liked for its clean, modern looks (60s)
- gradually became associated with souless corporations and rigid government
- it fell out of favor in the 70s and for a long time during the 'grunge' movement
- by the late 90's people again go back to the clean lines, modern looks, and the cycle continues !
For some fluffy dessert after all the heavy font adoration, just watch CollegeHumor's FontFight :)
